The Spond app currently has around 3 million monthly active users and firmly resides in the top of AppStore Sports category as well as Popular Apps category on Google Play in Norway. The Spond platform is also available internationally and is experiencing strong traction both in Norway, the UK and around the world.

We are now looking for an experienced and curious backend developer to help us scale and maintain the platform that is powering our apps and browser-based products. You will work closely with fellow engineers, product and UX in a distributed team and be involved in all phases of product development, from new feature discussions to rolling out features to production to on-call. Some of the core technologies you will work with include Java, Spring Boot, Jersey, JPA, PostgreSQL, Redis, OpenAPI, gRPC and Thrift, Gradle, Go, CircleCI, Kubernetes, Vault, Terraform, ArgoCD, Datadog and AWS — but you’ll have a chance to influence the stack as we together embark on the journey to ship quality features to make our vast user base even happier. 

This position is based in Oslo, valid work permit for Norway is required.
 

What you will do:

• Design, develop and deploy scalable, secure, maintainable and well-tested Java backend microservices running in self-service Kubernetes platform on AWS.

• Work closely within a cross-functional team, including UX/UI designers, product managers, and other developers to ensure the delivery of best-in-class applications through all the stages from ideation to post-deployment observability.

• Adhere to and promote the best developer experience in coding, documentation and testing. 

• Implement and maintain CircleCI-based CI/CD pipelines to frequently test and ship code all the way to production.

• Optimize services for maintainability, performance and scalability, addressing any bottlenecks while serving 1 billion requests per week (and growing).

• Participate in code reviews, provide and receive constructive feedback to continually raise the bar for quality and developer experience. Review and author RFC documents.

• Stay updated with emerging technologies and introduce new tools and techniques to improve development efficiency and platform performance when it makes sense.

• Troubleshoot, debug, and monitor existing applications with self-service observability platform, ensuring zero downtime while maintaining user satisfaction. 

• Operate on-call roster and provide second-line technical support to customer success team.

Skills we are looking for:

• Demonstrated experience in designing, building and scaling robust microservice architectures.

• In-depth knowledge of Java ecosystem, with an added advantage for those with Go programming skills.

• Hands-on experience with continuous delivery practices and a strong understanding of testing pyramid strategies.

• Strong product mindset with emphasis on user-centric solutions and understanding business impact of technical decisions

• Results-oriented, structured and methodical approach to work.

• Comfortable working with and maintaining legacy code, making it well-tested and pleasant to read.

• Fluency in English is essential (understanding Norwegian is a plus but not mandatory).
